Fiji is currently rabies-free; however, mosquito-borne illnesses are prevalent. Visitors should be aware of diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus, which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Additionally, typhoid and leptospirosis are present in Fiji, often associated with contaminated water sources.
To minimise the risk of these infections, consider the following precautions:
Use Insect Repellent: Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent.
Wear Protective Clothing: Opt for long-sleeved shirts and long pants, preferably in light colours, to reduce mosquito bites.
Ensure Proper Accommodations: Stay in places with well-screened windows or use mosquito nets, especially if resting during the day.
Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly remove or clean potential mosquito breeding sites, such as containers that collect water.
Stay Informed: Monitor local health advisories and updates from Fiji's Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
Vaccinations: Ensure routine vaccinations are up-to-date and consider additional vaccines as recommended by healthcare providers.
By taking these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of mosquito-borne and other infections during your stay in Fiji.
